How It All Started

The Fat Italian started in my home kitchen in 2020 — lockdown, no going out, just me, a pasta machine, and a lot of time.
I didn’t trust many of the food options out there — I wasn’t always sure what was really going into things, and the quality felt inconsistent.

So I started making my own: real ingredients, properly made pasta, and no shortcuts — just good food for my family.
What began as a way to pass time quickly grew — turns out, I wasn’t the only one craving better ravioli in Nairobi.
Together with my husband, we turned this little kitchen project into TFI, with one simple mission:
To bring Nairobi delicious, convenient, and trusted pasta — made fresh, with no preservatives, and always by hand.
That sense of trust and consistency is still at the heart of everything we do.

About Rachna

Born and raised in the UK, I moved to Kenya in 2018 as an optometrist — but I’ve always had a soft spot for pasta. It’s what I’d pick off every menu, and Italian was always my first choice when eating out.
When a chef friend gifted me her pasta machine, it sparked something deeper. I even went to Italy to learn more and eventually decided to turn that passion into something bigger.

Starting this business was a scary leap — I’m not a trained chef — but the love people showed for my food kept me going. I’ve always believed in freezing fresh food at its best, which is why we now offer both fresh and fresh-frozen lines.
Five years on, I’m still learning, still cooking, and so grateful to every customer who’s been part of the journey.
